About ANZSHM Inc.

ANZSHM was established in 1986, to promote the study of the history of health sciences within the Australian, New Zealand and the wider Pacific region. ANZSHM is a federated organisation, incorporated in Victoria. There are two branches.

The Society’s membership is diverse, coming from Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific, and other parts of the world, and a range of backgrounds.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the history of health and illness. To join ANZSHM, click the Membership bar, top right of this page.

Governance

A Council of Management, comprising 18 volunteer members, governs the business of the Society. An Executive of 4 elected Office Bearers is responsible for day-to-day operations. Other Councillors are appointed to specific roles.

All ANZSHM members are entitled to vote at Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings of the Society (see ANZSHM Inc. Rules).

Members are encouraged to participate in the Society’s activities, including contributing to committee work.

ANZSHM proudly recognises members (current and past) awarded Honorary Membership of the Society for extensive service.

Branches

The Society has two branches:

Members living in either of these states automatically hold membership of the respective branch and are entitled to vote at meetings of that branch.

Publications

ANZSHM publishes:

“What’s on in medical history” - a periodic bulletin of events, issued by email.

SEMINAR SERIES - Throughout the year, ANZSHM hosts seminars online which are recorded for later access.

Conferences and Other Activities

ANZSHM holds conferences biennially. Grants are available to assist eligible higher degree students and early career researchers who wih to present a paper at a conference. ANZSHM’s Book Prize, awarded biennially, is for the best member-authored book, published within a specified period, on Australian, New Zealand or Pacific medical and health history.

A Medical History Reading Group meets throughout the year online.

All activities are posted in the Events Calendar

Australian Medical Pioneers Index (AMPI)

Established in the 1990s, AMPI was a collaborative research scheme led by Stephen Due, a medical librarian and ANZSHM member, with development and publication by State Library Victoria.

This citizen-history project encouraged the public to contribute data about medical practitioners in colonial Australia. Built before digitisation was available, AMPI used a 1990s-style web-coding which is no longer supported.

An e-book published from the project can be searched using OCR, see:

The Australian Medical Pioneers Index 1788-1875 Volume 1 A-Z, 2nd Ed. by Noel David Richards and Stephen Colville Due
